9/11/01 - 9/11/21

Art by Emma, 10 years old

School day mornings were a crazy cacophony of cereal, back packs, bathroom sharing and pony tail making.  Were Doggin and blank blank packed in Joe's diaper bag? Were the girl's swim suits and gear ready for Gator Swim Club practice afterschool?  Would it be Kraft mac & cheese for dinner? or would we drop in on Gramma and Boppa and eat real food?

But this particular morning 20 years ago, images of planes, smoke, and fleeing New Yorkers filled the TV screen.  The morning froze and the plans of the day seemed to fall away ..... I remember calling my dad, waking him up....." TV ..... planes ...... bombs? ...... New York ...... people, the people ...... Pentagon ......." ......... Usually talking to dad made the hard things better.  But not this hard thing.  Not this day.

I remember 10 year old Emma watching the twin towers puff smoke out of it's windows and ask, "Those buildings aren't going to fall are they mom?"  And my younger, less wise self assured her they were built of steel, and cement.  Surely they wouldn't fall ........

And not 5 minutes later, we were watching the South Tower collapse upon itself.

I will never forget.
